WHEEL Initiative

Working together to improve the lives of children and the community by reducing environmental exposures to lead

Welcome to the WHEEL Initiative.

The WHEEL Initiative is a community organization dedicated to addressing the problem of lead in McLennan and surrounding counties. WHEEL stands for "Waco Human Environmental Exposure to Lead."

For decades, lead was used in paint and in gasoline, and this caused contamination of our local environments. Lead can be found inside and outside our homes.

The Texas Department of State Health Services tracks the number of children who are exposed to unacceptable levels of lead. Data from the TDSHS has shown that McLennan County has the highest number of children who have more lead in their bodies than is considered safe.

Children are most susceptible to the effects of lead. Lead is found in dust and in soil, and children from the ages of 6 months to 3 years often play around these areas. The effects of lead in children can last for the rest of their lives. Children who are exposed to lead tend to have trouble performing well in school. Some research shows that children who are exposed to lead may be more likely to commit violent crimes later in life.

The WHEEL Initiative is a community organization with the mission of addressing the problems of lead in our community. Our goals are to lower the number of children whose lives are affected by lead, and to lower the levels of lead in children over all. These goals can only be accomplished if we all work together. We are always recruiting community organizations and volunteers to participate.
